Day 18: A book that disappointed you!

Okay, haha, I seriously can not make up my mind about this one... first, I had a long post typed up about the first Bloody Jack book, because that was disappointing.  I thought I'd really like it, and then in the end I just really hated it.  When I was almost finished with the review I suddenly remembered reading The Death Cure by James Dashner.  It was the final book in the Maze Runner series, and did not provide one single reason or answer any of the reader's questions.  It was the conclusion without the reveal.  It was a big utter pile of disappointment.  Annnd theeeeeen I remembered reading THIS book!

Iced by Karen Marie Moning

book

Hands down this was the most disappointing book I've ever read.  Why?  Well, let's use my 3 Reasons method.  (Spoilers ahead)

Reason 1: The horrible turn that she took with poor Christian.  First, the Unseelie Princes did not have wings.  Period.  The only one who had wings was Cruce and that was because the Unseelie King created him in his own image, with wings.  The other Princes were wingless!  Also, this kinda evil Christian... it was like there was nothing of the old Christian in him, and I just can't believe that people aren't fighting to find a way to save him.  No way.

Reason 2: Ryodan.  In Fever I really liked Ryo.  I could see the differences between Ryo and Barrons, the most important was that Barrons was the number 1.  In Iced it felt like Ryo stopped having his own personality and ended up just reading like a regurgitated version of JZB and in no way did I ever feel as though he was 'bigger or badder' than my boy Jericho.  Bottom line.  I didn't buy it.

Reason 3: And probably the most important reason.  It was so twisted and sick to read two grown men, Christian and Ryo, both lusting over a 14 year old girl.  It wasn't subtle, and it doesn't really matter how you try to rationalize it, they were sniffing her and making comments about her panties and talking about how they were just biding time until she was older.  It was gross and it made the men seem skeevy and disgusting.  I can't imagine anyone having a daughter and thinking this was okay.  Even worse was that the attraction was not something that Dani seemed into.  It weirded her out and made her uncomfortable, as it should.  It made me uncomfortable as the reader.  I knew that something like this would happen, but I had hopes that she would have aged Dani or have found a way to make the sexual tension veeeeeeeeeery subtle, or something that didn't feel like two dirty old men being inappropriate.

I loved the Fever series.  I loved Barrons.  I waited on pins and needles for Iced and preordered the hardback, waiting at the door on the day of the delivery.  Within seconds of finishing the book I wished I could go back in time and unorder it.  I will continue reading this spin off, but only to see how Mac and Barrons play into it, and I will not be buying this in hardcover.
