Day 29: A book everyone hated but I liked!
I scoured and scoured my bookshelves, because I don't actually have that many books that I feel like others hated. I'm pretty boring that way, if the masses hate it, likely I wasn't fond of it. It's more often that the masses love something that I think doesn't deserve it.
With that said, there was this one book that people hated, but I thought was good for what it was:
The Exile by Diana Gabaldon
Illustrated by Hoang Nguyen
Naysayers say: There wasn't enough depth to the story!
Wendy says: Um, hello! It's a graphic novel! The whole thing is told in comic bubbles! How much depth did you expect?!
Naysayers say: All the men look the same, I can't tell who's who!
Wendy says: They all have brown hair and are rough looking dirty men, 10 bucks says they'd have been hard to tell apart in real life too.
Naysayers say: Claire's boobs just kept getting bigger and bigger through the course of the book!
Wendy says: It's a graphic novel! Have you seen the way those women are stacked?! There's always something exaggerated. One illustrator may choose to emphasis they huge weepy eyes, another chooses the bosom and tiny waist. Guess what, Claire's not the weepy type, Claire IS curvy though. Why didn't you expect something like this?!
Naysayers say: Jamie loved another woman before Claire?! Never!
Wendy is rolling her eyes: Jamie didn't spring into full grown man the day he met Claire, there was always a possibility that he had feelings for someone else. Also, one meeting in a tavern does not make 'love'.
This book was what it was. I expected it to be a glimpse into the life of Jamie through thoughts (thought bubbles, hello!) and images. Some images were just so-so, some images were visually stunning. My guess is, most graphic novels are just like that. I am glad I purchased this book for my Outlander collection.
