There Are No Atheists in Foxholes, Kids
Woweewow...
Man, two great books, one right after the other! I seriously have no idea why I didn't listen to friends and read Ashfall and Friday Brown a long time ago. That was absolutely excellent!
I have never ever read a post-apocalyptic story that didn't have something to do with zombies or evil dictators/regimes... I am now seriously afraid of a supervolcano eruption.
Alex was a really great hero because he started off as a normal guy, playing World of Warcraft and being a little shit to his mother, but over the course of the book he grew up right before your eyes. He was the perfect companion for Darla because of their opposing strengths. Darla was knowledgeable about basic first aid, mechanics, and survival. Alex was trained in self-defense and martial arts, Alex had a drive to continue to push forward, no matter the odds he intended to survive. Darla knew when to look out for themselves, Alex knew when to show compassion.
And Darla herself, I was so nervous that when she showed up in the story that she'd be your typical lame female character written by a male. Weak, whining and wimpy. She wasn't, not at all. Darla was strong in nearly all the right ways. I'm not but, if I could be a character from one of these types of books Darla would be in the running.
So yeah... really really awesome book. I read the whole thing in 6 hours. There was absolutely no way I could put it down after the first chapter.
