Darkhouse (Experiment in Terror)

Darkhouse - Karina Halle

Ooooh, why do I wait so long to read some series?! What about them makes me keep setting them aside? I’ve had this book forEVER and I waited to pick it up and now I'm kicking myself because that was GREAT!

Perry Palomino (love that name!) is one mess of a girl. She's been struggling with some type of depression; we don't know what because it hasn't been revealed yet. She's spent her life struggling with her weight. And at 22 years old she is an all around insecure woman. All of this is what made me really relate to her. Perry is ME. From the weight struggles to the insecurities, I am Perry Palomino. I mean, there are even those times where she's all 'say something witty, say something witty' and what comes out is 'I carried a watermelon'. So ME!

Perry bumps into Dex Foray, literally bumps, and after surprise twists and some adrenaline pumping action Dex offers Perry a possible job as amateur ghost hunters. After some serious hemming and hawing (which most real people would do!) Perry decides to try it because she’s always thought she was meant for something more. Who doesn’t, lol!

So, to sum the majority of the book, the scary ghosty part of the story with the lighthouse/darkhouse was good. It was sufficiently creepy and the ghosts were gross enough. I heard that this aspect of the book gets even better with each installment. Still, even for book 1 (after the first 15%) I wasn't bored. I also got a kick out of Perry's Uncle Al and her cousins Tony and Matt. I hope they're in later books too.

But the REAL beauty of this book was the relationship/friendship that we saw developing between Dex and Perry. See, Dex is a little bit weird. His emotions fluctuate rapidly and Perry is a little weirded out by him.

I knew from experience that you weren't supposed to trust the guys you thought were as sexy as hell.Dark, brooding and mysterious? Handle with care.

She's also attracted to him, because let's face it, he's an attractive guy. I was attracted to him! With his Errol Flynn stache, slightly crazy grin, quick snark and sexy hair... this is what I pictured!

dex

(Okay guys, so he doesn't have black hair, and his eyes are blue in real life... still, that face, that facial hair, the shorter but well muscled look... dye his hair, ladies. Put some contacts in. That face is Dex Foray!)

Anyway, so back to the story. Perry is stuck in this spot of feeling like Dex 'is an ax-murderer that I want to screw'. Great tension. And then to make it worse for her, Dex says things like:

Not to mention that she's beautiful, sexy and charming. You know it, I know it, and soon everyone else will know it. The only person who doesn't know it is her because of archaic fuckheads like yourself telling her otherwise.

*swoon* How do you NOT fall for that guy?!

In closing: Dex/Perry = Great Chemistry! Story plot = Promising! Humor = I literally laughed outloud!

eriously happy with this series, it's taken me over! Must. Read. Next. IMMEDIATELY!
