Blood Red Road: Dustlands: 1

Blood Red Road (Dust Lands, #1) - Moira Young

I love the dystopian genre. The dire circumstances, the battle against insurmountable odds, the rise against oppression... it all just makes for a instantly good read.

Saba, along with her sister Emmi and her Crow Nero, is searching for her brother Lugh who's been taken by the Tonton for unknown reason. Along the way she meets the Free Hawks and Jack, the good looking mysterious boy who makes Saba's heartstone heat up. (Oooooh, get your minds outta the gutter!)

Saba was a bit of a bitch, but I think that's exactly how we were supposed to feel about her. I actually don't mind characters written like Saba. She actually reminded me of the dystopian version of Taylor Markham. They are who they are because of the lives they live. I much prefer characters like this to ones that I'm supposed to like but they are just written as self-involved. Saba undergoes a change through out the book, not only showing her hidden depth in terms of survival but also figuring out who else, other then Lugh, means something to her. In the beginning it was hard to understand her, but in the end I did and I liked her. She's a worthy hero, just as strong and deep as Katniss.

This was a good start to the series, with good characters and an original plot. I've already got questions and theories about the future books in the Dustland series... like who the heck is DeMalo?!
